Glossary of Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) Terms

SEO and Internet MarketingThe Word Wide Web, computers and technology have spawned a completely new jargon. Sometimes old words take on a new meaning, sometimes acronyms are used, and sometimes new words are derived from the slang in common use by programmers.

Here then is a list of commonly used SEO Terms. For a more complete list, see the wiki SEO Glossary.com:

SEO Term Explanation
Above the Fold Refers to the top portion of a newspaper. In web marketing it means the area of a page visible prior to scrolling.
AdWords Google's CPC (Cost Per Click) based text advertising.
AJAX Asynchronous JavaScript And XML. Makes a Web page more responsive and user-friendly.
Algorithm The rules that a search engine uses to index content and display the results.
ALT text The spiders derive keywords from the ALT description of the HTML Image tag. Shown when the mouse hovers over the image.
Anchor text This is used in a Hyperlink (usually underlined) by the Search Engines to determine relevancy and to create a relationship between sites.
ASP Active Server Pages is a Microsoft programming language for building dynamic web sites.
Black-Hat SEO This term is used to describe SEO practices that are counter to the Search Engine guidelines.
Bounce Rate The measure of the quality of the traffic to a Website.
Content Also known as Text or Copy. The words in web page that the user sees and that are used to determine rankings.
Conversion rate The proportion of visitors that are converted to customers.
CPC Cost Per Click is the price for a click-through to your landing page.
Crawler This is a program the follows all the links on each Web page.
Crawl Frequency How often a website is crawled. Sites that are frequently updated will be crawled frequently.
CSS A Cascading Style Sheet is used to control the presentation of a Website.
Demographics Statistical data or characteristics which define segments of a population.
Directory Listings List of Websites, categorized and organized by topic by individual editors.
Domain Authority Used in conjunction with Domain Trust to assess a Website’s PageRank. The greater the number of Links and the more diverse the source, the greater the Authority of the Website. There needs to be a balance between the Link quantity and diversity.
Domain Trust Used in conjunction with Domain Authority to assess a Website’s PageRank. The older the Website is, the more it conforms to ethical standards and the higher the quality of the BackLinks – the greater the Domain Trust.
Google Analytics Google Analytics is a free analytical tool that provides detailed Website visitor statistics.
Heading tag An HTML tag that is usually in bold with a large font. Search engines give more weight to Heading tags.
Home page This will welcome visitors and to inform them of the contents of the website. The Home page of a website will usually rank better than any other page.
HTML The Hypertext Markup Language is the programming language used to display the content of a Website.
Incoming links These are also known as Backlinks. Quality Backlinks are relevant in determining rankings.
Index This is the database of a search engine which holds Web page content of every page visited by its spider.
Indexer A program that analyses Web pages downloaded by the spider.
Internet The Internet is a worldwide computer network that enables people to send and receive information.
ISP An Internet Service Provider provides services to customers like Internet connectivity, email, Website hosting and domain name registration.
Keyword Phrase The phrase that is used in a search. SEO ensures that the content of a page includes targeted Keywords.
Keyword Stuffing Excessive use of identical Keywords on Web pages.
Keyword Density The percentage of keywords on a web page. A high value can have a negative impact on SEO.
Landing Page This is the web page that visitors see when they click an advertisement or organic Search listing.
Link Juice Link Juice is the amount of PageRank given to a page from an external link. It is Link Juice that improves the ranking for a search phrase, which in turn attracts visitors to a website.
Links Clicking on a text or graphic Link will transfer the visitor to another web page.
Long Tail Queries Queries with many Keywords that comprise most of the Searches.
LSI Latent Semantic Indexing is a mathematical representation of a Web page based on the similarity of pages and keywords.
META Tags Meta Tags provide information about information. These tags in the HTML of a Web page summarise the content of a Web page. The Description tag may be displayed in the Results Page (SERP).
PageRank This is a Google link analysis algorithm that measures the importance of Linked web pages.
Page Title This is the text that is displayed at the top of the browser window. It is shown in the SERP, and is an important SEO factor, as it has a large effect on the Search Engine Ranking.
Search Engines These are the Websites that provide visitors with the ability to search the content of Web pages on the Internet. The big three, Google, Yahoo! and Bing handle the majority of Search Engine traffic.
SEM Search Engine Marketing is the use of paid advertising on the Internet to market products or services.
SEO Search Engine Optimisation covers the strategies and tactics for increasing the number of visitors to a Website, as well as increasing the conversion rate of the visitors to customers.
SERP The Search Engine Results Page.
SERP Ranking Increasing the position of a Website in the SERPs is the prime objectives of SEO.
Sitemap A Sitemap helps visitors and Search Engines find all the pages of a web site. A Sitemap is necessary if dynamic Web pages are used. Google, Bing and Yahoo now use the same XML Sitemap protocol.
Spiders Also known as Bots, Robots and Web Crawlers. The programs that find and add the contents of Websites to the Search Engine index database.
Target Audience This is the market selected which has the best chance of buying the product or service. Only when the Target Audience has been identified should the page content of a Website be written.
Theme The main keyword focus of a Web page.
URL The Uniform Resource Locator, or the Website Address. It can specify the location of a Web page, an Email address, or a file.
Viral Marketing These are self propagating marketing channels – email, blogging, word of mouth, and social news sites.
Web 2.0 Websites that encourage user interaction, such as Facebook and Wikipedia.
Website Metrics The measurement of visitor attributes and traffic volumes for a Website.
Web standards These are widely adopted guidelines for CSS, HTML, XHTML, etc. Web standards ensure that Websites are accessible on a wide variety of platforms.
White-Hat SEO This term is used to describe approved SEO practices, which do not attempt to dishonestly manipulate the SERP Rankings.
