Website Search Engine Optimisation Tips

Rankings and Slow Web Site Speed

Rankings and Slow Web Site SpeedGoogle has over 200 quality factors that are used in determining where to rank the result of a search. One of these factors is the time it takes to down load a Web page. Slow page load times will cause the Ranking for a Keyword to be downgraded. Worse still, slow load times may cause a Web page to timeout and be excluded from the Search Engine index.

As network traffic increases, fast load times will become increasingly important for Website Search Engine Optimisation. If your Website is slow, don't expect to be on the first page of the Search Engine results. This applies to all the Search Engines.

Slow load times will result in a high bounce rate, due to visitors being too impatient to wait - and a high bounce rate can also negatively impact Rankings. The sales conversion rate will be low as the visitors will not stay long. Returning customer rates will suffer.

A positive user-experience is important. Customers prefer fast Websites, and impressed customers will buy your product.

Server Processing

Some of the reasons which could cause a delay in viewing a Web Page are:

  • A slow database connection or lengthy database processing
  • A slow Server
  • The Server coding logic

Asynchronous processing (allowing the page to load without interruption) can significantly reduce Server related delays.

Web Page Size

The size of the file that is being downloaded can be large due to:

  • A large View State when using ASP.Net
  • Large sized Images (see the article on Optimising Images)
  • Use of sound, JavaScript, Java libraries, plug-ins or Flash
  • Loading unused CSS styles

The construction of the Web Page will have to be simplified to reduce the file size. Web Sites can be attractive without having lots of graphics and fancy gimmicks.

Monitoring Response Times

The download speeds of all of the pages in a Website need to be regularly monitored. Every page should take less than 5 seconds to load.
